careful For Picking Films:Mahie Gill

Mahie Gill had started off quite well with DEV D and GULAAL but of late had pretty much disappeared from the arena, save for a NOT A LOVE STORY and now SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER. One wonders what really was she waiting for that made her go so slow.
"I wasn't going slow. On the contrary I have been working in quite a few films. Today I have four more films lined up for release. Having said that, there was a time period immediately after DEV D when I was being quite careful about picking up my next lot of films. I am an outsider in the industry and didn't know what sort of films to do and what not to do. Even though there were dozens of scripts lined up for me to go through, I wasn't intelligent enough to point at anything in particular and decide things on my own. I chose to wait for the entire set up to be in place before I became a part of it," details Mahie.
One hopes she doesn't have much grudge today. After all, there are films like PAAN SINGH TOMAR with Irfan Khan, MICHAEL with Naseeruddin Shah and BUDHHA IN THE TRAFFIC JAM with Anupam Kher/Arunoday Singh lined up for her before the first half of 2012 is through.
"Well, I just hope that people like these films and they do well," she sighs, "I had great hopes from GULAAL as well and was very sad when it didn't work. Whoever saw the film liked it but then not many stepped into theatres. Same was the case with UTT PATAANG as well. The journey isn't over after you have done a film; you have to keep your fingers crossed and pray to God that your film is promoted, released and accepted well too."
We hope that your prayers are answered Mahie when your SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER releases all over this Friday and indeed turns out to be a good success.

RA.ONE: Androgynous Male

While everyone has been talking about Chammak Challo by Akon as having set the pace for Shah Rukh Khan starrer RA.ONE, an interesting side light that is appearing in the teasers is not being commented upon, though it underlines the coming of age of the gender relationships as they are shown in Hindi cinema. Just rewind to the scene where Kareena Kapoor is trying to knead dough and has messed the situation and in that situation walks Shah Rukh Khan. Conventionally it would be expected that he would help Kareena Kapoor in completing the process, but he adds to the misery of Kareena by blowing the powdered wheat on to her face.
It might appear an innocuous act to generate humor in the film, but it is an important societal comment on the gender progression. In this age when a woman feels that she is equal to a man in all respects, then by that virtue when she has to face an ignominious situation in the kitchen she should not expect sympathy.
Just a few months ago AARAKSHAN also had the same situation where Saif Ali Khan eventually taught Deepika Padukone how to make chapattis. Indeed, this chapatti scene in Hindi films, more when a female star is slightly progressive, has been used as a comment as her drawback to learn the basics expected from her when she reaches a marriageable age. It had in all probability started with KAALIA where a Parveen Babi was trying to make an omelet to show that indeed she is well versed in nuances of kitchen as well to be a perfect bahu, but with disastrous results.
Shah Rukh Khan in RA.ONE by blowing away the dry wheat powder on Kareena Kapoor's face is also sort of a message to scene writers for the future to do away with such scenes, as the times have advanced, have changed, and with these changing times there is no need for a girl to try to stick to conventional roles expected from her. One needs to move ahead with the times.
After all, RA.ONE is a futuristic film and in one way or the other it needs to throw up portents for the future. This being the case, then why not addresses the issue of chapatti making, and presents it in a different manner as well. After all, a way to a man's heart now no longer be through the chapatti that a woman makes, it can be bought from the market and presented by heating it in a microwave as well.

Montek meets PM

Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday amid controversy over the panel's affidavit in the Supreme Court defining poverty line cut-offs which have triggered strong opposition from food rights activists.
Ahluwalia is expected to clear the stance of planning commission on the issue at a press conference Monday.
Sources said Ahluwalia, who was on a visit abroad, met the prime minister for the first time since the controversy erupted after an affidavit filed by the panel in Supreme Court last month.
The affidavit said that poverty line for urban and rural areas could be provisionally placed at Rs.965 per capita per month (about Rs.32 per day) for urban areas and Rs.781 per capita per month (about Rs.26 per day) for rural areas.
Apart from food rights activists, opposition parties had also slammed the government over the affidavit.
The number of poor entitled to below poverty line (BPL) benefits, as per the affidavit, has been estimated at 40.74 crore.
Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi is also learnt to have expressed his concern over the poverty line cut offs.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni admitted Saturday that there was concern among people on the issue.
She said the figures could undergo a change. 'There is a certain disquiet in the civil society and some sections. They believe the statistics are perhaps somewhat removed from reality,' she said.
Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh had sent a missive to the panel on the issue.
National Advisory Council members Aruna Roy and N.C. Saxena also expressed reservations over the poverty line cut offs.
Saxena said that only dogs and animals can live at Rs.32 a day and said that people spending that kind of amount were poorest of the poor.
Following the uproar, Ahluwalia said that the affidavit was 'factually correct' and it was not a new policy decision but simply a factual explanation given to the apex court on how poverty lines were calculated based on Suresh Tendulkar report.
